7 Fun Things to Do in Boston at Night

Boston makes it easy to build a night around stories, music, art, skyline views and a little friendly competition. Adults looking for a memorable evening can start with a history pub crawl, settle into live jazz, roam the MFA after dinner, catch a show, try stargazing, walk the waterfront or chase an arcade high score.

The trick is to choose one anchor activity and let the rest of the evening stay pleasantly loose. Boston’s compact center keeps the night moving smoothly, with room for a proper story, a good drink and a view of the harbor.

Start with stories and taverns around Faneuil Hall

A Boston night gets considerably more interesting when somebody knows which old stories were edited out of the respectable version. The Independence Pub Crawl from Boston Crawling is an adults-only history tour pub crawl that visits four bars around Faneuil Hall and the Freedom Trail with an expert local guide. Expect hidden and hilarious Boston history, local taverns, drink recommendations and fellow travelers who are also ready to have an actual conversation.

The crawl runs daily at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with an additional noon crawl on Saturdays and Sundays, and lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes. Drinks, including nonalcoholic options, are available for purchase at the stops. The 7 p.m. crawl is the natural nightlife pick, while the earlier times leave room for dinner, a show or another stop afterward. Everyone must be 21 or older and bring valid ID.

This is our own tour, so yes, we are biased. We are also correct that colonial misbehavior lands better in a tavern than in a hotel lobby.

Get close to the music at Wally’s

At Wally’s Café Jazz Club, the room is narrow, the musicians are close and the evening revolves around the bandstand. The South End institution has hosted live music since 1947 and still presents it every night of the year.

Jam sessions run Tuesday through Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by later sets, while nightly music continues until midnight. Arrive early because the room is intimate and seating is limited. The close quarters put the bandstand at the center of the whole night, exactly where it belongs.

Take the MFA up on its late hours

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston stays open until 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. That gives you time to wander after dinner, linger with whatever catches your eye and make an evening of it.

Pick one wing or exhibition and give it your full attention. Pause when you want, follow your curiosity and accept that several thousand years of art will happily wait for another visit. Check the museum calendar and current ticket options before you go.

Let Boston’s stages choose the entertainment

Boston’s evening calendar includes plays, musicals, comedy, dance, opera and concerts in venues ranging from grand theaters to small rooms. Browse the current BosTix arts calendar to see what is playing during your visit. Its filters make it easy to search by date, category, location and accessibility features.

A performance gives everyone a place and time to meet, then supplies a ready-made conversation for the walk to the next stop.

Look up from a Boston University rooftop

Boston University’s Public Open Night at the Coit Observatory offers a very different kind of city view. On most Wednesday evenings, weather permitting, visitors can use telescopes and learn about the night sky. The program begins at 8:30 p.m. from April through September and 7:30 p.m. from October through March.

Tickets are free but limited, and BU generally releases them on Thursday morning for the following Wednesday. Confirm the event on the day because clouds, rain or haze can cancel observing. The observatory is reached only by stairs, an important detail for anyone planning around accessibility.

Give the skyline a little breathing room

For a lower-key stretch of the evening, use the official Boston Harborwalk map to choose a manageable waterfront section. The route around Long Wharf gives you harbor views close to Faneuil Hall, while the walk toward Fan Pier opens a wider look back at the skyline.

Choose a short stretch around dusk and pair it with a nearby reservation. Let the city sparkle for a bit while your group decides whether dessert is a shared experience or a deeply individual responsibility.

Settle a score at VERSUS

VERSUS in Downtown Crossing combines a bar and pub food with retro and modern games, including Pac-Man, skee-ball, pinball, giant Jenga and gaming consoles. It is open daily and becomes a 21-and-over venue after 7 p.m. Current closing times range from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., depending on the night, so check the posted hours before declaring a midnight rematch.

Games keep the evening flexible and give everyone something to jump into. They also reveal who has been quietly preparing for an NBA Jam emergency since 1999.

Build a Boston night with a plot

The best Boston nightlife plan is simple: book one experience you are excited about, add one flexible option nearby and leave a little room for the evening to surprise you. Start with a Boston Crawling history tour pub crawl, catch a set, inspect some art or chase a high score. A good Boston night has an opening chapter, a strong supporting cast and at least one story worth retelling tomorrow.
